" Spring Paddle-out" 16"x 20" oil on canvas
I am fortunate that I live in a place where the water is warm enough for the average person to go out for a little surf romp. This is a beach where a novice surfer like me can get a few waves after all the big surfers have gone home. Usually I would get stuck in the impact zone like this painting shows. Not to worry, the waves look scarier than the are and even less scary when I paint them later.

I spent the last three weeks painting only in the studio due to that little sea monster that stung me. I wished I could be running around chasing the light with the Plein Air Painters but I needed to keep my foot up. This is from a photo that I took out on one of my adventures. I loved the way the roses were in front of this window. I chose to make the inside of the window gold to show that the light is on inside at about 6 Am. While the roses are blooming in all their glory in the morning light one wonders if the person on the other side of the window will take time to notice. I have named this painting "Transcendance" 14"x18" oil on canvas This last summer I packed my painting gear down the long path to Crystal Cove. The water there is very clear, like its' namesake. I found this spot where there weren't too many rocks to step over. The rocks here are smooth sand stone and conglomerate. This rock sets the gateway for you to come and enjoy "Pure Life." Both of these paintings were the demonstration paintings for two workshops that I taught at the city of Lakewood. The students learned how to plan a composition, mix colors and different brush techniques. Our next workshop will be starting Saturday at 1:00 September15 at Del Valle Park in Lakewood. But I know that painting the sea is both a a challenge and a passion. I am learning everyday and still need to learn a lot more. Just painted this one yesterday on location at Talbert Channel. It was great to paint and swim. 11"x14" oil on linen panel. Scanned image has some cropping.
I have been making a point to paint and swim at Sunset Beach lately. The weather has been hot this last week but perfect for a morning swim at low tide at Sunset Beach. Venture out with me over these little swells, then over the shore break to the outside where it is calm and you can lay sunny side up and enjoy. This painting comes complete with sand particles because it was painted on location. 9x12 linen panel. I was fortunate to paint with Erin Dertner in June. She did a wonderful demonstration of this view all in palette knife. Here is my interpretation using a brush. I tried a little palette knife texture down on the ice plant. This is a new type view for me since I usually go for the waves. "Fire and Ice" 9" x12" oil on canvas panel.
