When I paint on location I like to keep my kit fairly light so that I can go anywhere and paint. I usually get everything in to a small back pack. The heaviest thing in there are my paints. Even though I use a limted pallette of four to five colors, I like to have plenty of choices to choose from. The location, weather or even how I feel about a place will influence my desicion of the colors to choose that day. You can see on this website that the oceans and skies vary in each painting.

Just finished this 18"x 24" painting from my sketches I did in Hawaii. this place is on Oahu and the spot is at Pupukea Beach on the north shore. After being home for a few weeks I am trying to prolong the feeling of the place. Wish I could live there, but I don't. Just delivered this to the Scene Gallery in Newport Beach. The beaches that are nearest to where I live are pretty barren. We don't have all the plants, palms, flowers bluffs or rocks, but we we have the waves that's for sure. So when I want make a quick run out to paint somewhere I usually paint around Huntington Beach. (I think that's why they call it Surf City) This one is actually at Sunset Beach. Its called "Hazy Day Surfing" and it will be in the "View Points Show" April 27-May 11, April 27, Saturday 5:30 - 8p, Artist Reception. At Chemer's Gallery in Tustin here is the link for the venue: http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs159/1102099296590/archive/1112896321156.html Just got back from my latest painting Adventure on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Here are two of my sketches on location. I will be doing Larger paintings from these soon. This one on the left is at a beach called "Sharks Cove" 6"x 8" I may re-paint this as a 18"x 24" or 30" x 40". These two palms I painted at Haleiwa Beach in the howling wind. I tied down my gear pretty well but could not keep both paintings on the easel at the same time to paint a dypdick so I will re-paint them again as a larger composite. As preparation for the Rogers Garden Day of Art I am painting around the house . I love gardens and flowers as well as the sea. This is a little plein air sketch of my geranium garden . (9"x12" oil on linen) It is pretty loose compared to the orchid that I painted from a photograph below. (6"x 8" oil on canvas panel.) I used a simple palette of red, yellow, and green for these. You can see more garden on this website .
At this time of the year , when it is raining I go inside and try new color harmonies. Just like musicians, artists need to constantly try new melodies that please the eye. These are from a photos of sunflower fields that I took while painting in France. I used only three colors to paint these.

Went down to our local surf spot to paint, but It was overcast, and there was no swell. Most of the surfers were up at their cars talking and enjoying just being at the beach. I loved the glassy face on this little shore breaker against blue greys. See more California Seacapes on this website "Before the Rain" 9"x12" oil on panel
We actually do have fall in Southern California. This is a little demonstration painting I did for our workshop at the Eldorado Nature Center in Long Beach. It was about 90 degrees out on the trail, but we found a bit of shade and painted these Sycamore trees in our little snippet of nature left over from when the bulldozers carved out the 605 freeway.
