Painting the Ocean on Location

October is ths one of the most beautiful months of the year in Southern California. So this is when I really need to get out and paint, but somehow  I stuck doing household chores , errand etc. and I miss a day or two.

I felt so bad for missing a glorious day on Tuesday that I decided that no matter what I would paint .  Knowing that the weather forecast was 35% rain, I took the chance and went down to Crystal Cove .   I hiked down the trail with all my gear, walked out to my favorite spot to find that it was high tide. But  since I have painted  Crystal Cove at high tide before, I figured it would eventually drop while I was painting.  The tide kept coming up  as I was painting near the bluff, when it got to the legs of my easel, I  hoisted the rig up on to a rock then climbed up there. The rocks out there  in this painting were starting to get covered up, then woosh... the tide came up on to my rock and was about to suck out my supplies .... and then it started to rain, so I had to bid farewell, but with much gratitude for what I was allowed to get for the day I packed up and went back to my studio to put the final touches on  this painting.
I could have just taken a photo and went home, but I think seascapes from photos have a frozen in action look to them.  And I forgot camera anyway.

"Storming at Crystal Cove"  9"x12" oil on canvas

I am trying to post here every Thursday, so come by again next week and in the meantime check out more paintings on this website.

I  brought my  painter friend Fran yesterday down to Sunset Beach for a quick painting session as we watched the surf and surfers dropping into emerald green
waves. These guys will paddle out religiously everyday even when the waves are "junk" just to enjoy the energy of the cold water.   "Surf Relgion" 9"x 12" oil on linen panel.
